6. In deciding to locate in Thailand as a manufacturing location, the company considered several factors:

Actually, there were several factors that were considered. The type of products in Thailand; it is a fnished goods destination; its logistics and supply chain support; and it has site skill matching as well as a preferred location among customers.

Responding to a question about what distinguishes Thailand from other investment locations, the company noted:

The main reason is the infrastructure support found in Thailand compared to neighboring countries in the region. Thailand’s team culture, especially within Celestica Thailand, is also a key point, as we produce and present a kind of collaborative team work and supportive culture as a partner to our customers. The other important factor is reasonable logistics and government processes, so even though some processes might be worse than competitors, overall it is still acceptable.

When asked for the company’s view of how the infrastructure and logistics in Thailand rate, Celestica give Thailand marks of 9 out of 10. They note that “ As long as business is conducted in the right manner, the process works great.”

Asked whether Celestica has been able to fnd people with the necessary skills, or if they conduct on-site training, the response was “Both, some we have skilled people hired from outside, while in parallel we coach those with potential and offer on the job training with our expert staff.”

As to the importance of the incentives offered by the BOI in the company’s decision to locate in Thailand, Celestica offered “Definitely yes, it is important as well as to our customers too. Since the world turns very fast, the business trend changes and also dynamics, especially the Electronics market, so benefts need to have an interval review to make them a best ft for every party.”

The company was also asked for their view of whether or not they have found the BOI to be responsive, and whether there are any improvements they would like to suggest? The response was that “So far, BOI is in good performance in terms of being supportive and responsive, where improvements required would be from government policy, not the BOI.” The company also added that “The Government should empower BOI to grant more benefts to the investors in a wider scope. The Government and BOI should concentrate more on promoting Thailand to OEMs, e.g. CISCO, IBM or HP, and invite them to invest, especially at the front end such as R&D.”

With that, the company is pleased with Thailand as an investment locat ion and does have plans for future expansion.
